
The roots of higher education in Debrecen goes back to the sixteenth century. The Reformed College of Debrecen, founded in 1538, played a leading role in the preservation and development of education and Hungarian culture. The university had 5 departments, 3 of which were devoted to the teaching of philosophy . In 1908, there was a big change, when it created the Reformed Academy of Humanities and teacher training began, but within quite narrow limits.
